Attempts to breed the near threatened Weedy Sea Dragon have been a long and difficult process. The Birch Aquarium is one of the few aquariums in the world who have successfully reproduced this species in captivity.
It took them over 25 years to successfully hatch 2 Weedy Sea Dragons. With their numbers in the wild declining, aquariums have been working tirelessly for years to figure out how to properly reproduce and raise this species.
With this success under the Birch Aquarium’s belt, even more of these species can be reproduced and eventually re-population efforts can begin.
